As I got off of the airport Park-N-Go shuttle, the driver waved me off with the words “have fun”. I hadn’t really thought of that as a possibility. In fact, in caught me off guard. I’ve traveled for weddings, for reunions, for pleasure, for exploring, for love, and also just for the hell of it. But this is the first time I’ve traveled for this.
My Grandfather was one of the most incredible men I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing in my life. To say we were close doesn’t quite explain it. I am grateful that I had so many years to know him as a little girl and a Papa, and also so many years to know him as a woman and a man. He was amazing.
This weekend will be a celebration of his life, and although I know we will be filled with such sorrow, I can’t wait to just give my Grandma the biggest hug in the world and enjoy four unexpected days with her, my brother and his wife, my aunts and uncles, my parents, and my cousins who I love so much.
So yeah, why not? Maybe I will have fun. It’s what he would have wanted. In fact, in honor of him, I may even sip champagne all the way to Phoenix.
I love you Papa.
